Activities
Prospective travelers often tell me they want an “easy” and “fun” trip.
No problem! A safari is one of the easiest and most fun vacations you can have. You’ll meet your guide at the airport and from then on you will have little to do but fully immerse yourself into the safari experience. Don’t worry about where to eat, how to get from place to place, how to find interesting activities, or what things cost. We will handle it all.
Wildlife Game Drives
Daily wildlife game drives will be the highlight of each day. Enjoy being up close to large, small, familiar, rare, and exotic wildlife, picturesque landscapes, and local communities from the comfort of your 4x4 vehicle with a pop-up top.
Few safari locations live up to the extraordinary Maasai Mara. Safari travel began in the Mara and the appearance of free-roaming herds will leave you without words. You won’t have any trouble spotting wildebeests, cheetahs, giraffes, antelopes, and more. And our eagle-eyed guide will find and point out the African Big Five—lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhinoceros.
Kenya’s biggest attraction is the natural movement of mega-herds. The wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles follow the summer rains looking for fresh, sweet grasses in an annual pilgrimage called the Great Migration. Depending on when your Kenya safari takes place, you may witness the life-and-death struggles of the Mara River crossings or dramatic encounters with Africa’s top predators on the open plains.
Other locations also have their own special appeal. Several rare wildlife species reside in Samburu so you can add the Grevy zebra, gerenuk, and reticulated giraffe to your viewing checklist. The Mt. Kenya conservancies have the densest population of black rhinos in East Africa making it an important center for rhino conservation. Amboseli has breathtaking views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and resident elephant herds.
Safari Activities
Besides the diverse and extraordinary wildlife, other distinctly African experiences will be part of your safari adventure.
In addition to game drives, you can fill your days on safari with walking tours and night game drives, or kick back at the lodge for a swim, a nap, or a visit to the spa. Motor through a lake as hippos bob their heads. Take a photo with your foot on the Equator. Meet baby elephants and rhinos and hear stories of rescue and recovery at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. Kiss a Rothschild giraffe and learn how the Giraffe Center works to save this endangered species.
Take a spectacular hot air balloon ride as the sun rises over the Maasai Mara to gaze on herds below you. Come down to earth for a breakfast of champagne and hot foods served on linen-covered tables right on the savannah.
We’ll visit the indigenous Samburu and Maasai people in their tribal villages where you will be welcomed with song and dance. Tribespeople will tell you about their culture, demonstrate how they build their huts, and offer beautiful handicrafts for sale. Village children of all ages will swarm you with smiles and hope you brought them a lollipop or school supplies.
You can add other destinations to your safari too. We can take you across the border to Tanzania to see the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. How about relaxing on a world-class white sand beach in Zanzibar or the Kenyan coast before you leave Africa?
Accommodations
Lodgings will vary as we travel from the city into game reserves. In Nairobi, there are many 4 and 5-star hotels, each with local flavor. For historic ambiance, the Hotel Stanley and the Fairmount Norfolk are the oldest, most iconic hotels in Kenya. Nairobi has many other hotel choices if you prefer modern luxury, golf courses, and sleek decor.
While in the parks and game reserves, you’ll enjoy impeccable personal service at safari lodges that blend beautifully with the landscape. At some lodges, zebras, waterbucks and other animals will graze on the lawn outside your room or cottage. I think every traveler to Africa should sleep in at least one luxury tent lodge so I will be sure to add a “glamping” experience to your itinerary. Enjoy hotwater-bottle-warmed double or queen beds, a full bathroom, and the sounds of animals outside your canvas walls as you drift off to sleep.
Meals are delicious, hearty, and beautifully presented. Locally prepared foods are sure to please every palate. Lodge amenities vary, and include swimming pools, spa services, nature walks, entertainment, and conference facilities.
