FAQs
When to go?
It is generally sunny and temperate throughout the year in Kenya.
The safari high season is July and August when days are mostly dry with cooler temperatures. It is also when you might catch sight of the spectacular Wildebeest migration. Be aware that we will need at least six months to plan a high-season safari.
October through December is the “short rain season” but it is still an excellent time to go. The rains are short, temperatures are warm, and you’ll have the opportunity to see newborn animals and migratory birds.
January through March the rains subside and the temperatures rise into the 80s.
October through March there are fewer people, usually better lodge availability and rates, shorter planning times, and still excellent wildlife viewing.
April through June is the “long rain season,” sometimes called the green season. These months receive the largest amount of rain, sometimes making road travel difficult.
How much will it cost?
Safari possibilities are endless. Tell me how much you have to spend and I will work out the best plan. Custom Kenya Safaris starting prices are based on the size of your group, the length of your trip, and the time of year you travel. Expect to pay between $5500 to $7500 per person. These prices do NOT include airfare which you will obtain on your own.
Upscaling your lodges will increase the average safari cost as will choosing to fly between locations rather than driving throughout the safari. There are additional visa costs if you visit Tanzania.
How are you able to handle reservations since you are based in the US?
You can feel comfortable knowing that I work with a large and reputable tour company based in Kenya. Once I determine the itinerary my client(s) wants I contact the tour company by phone and online. They make all our arrangements and reservations. While in Kenya, I can contact them any time throughout our trip for help with last-minute changes or special issues. They have a fleet of excellent vehicles and seasoned, expert employees all ready to make sure your safari is as perfect as you expect it to be.
How long should a trip be?
Whether your safari is 7, 12, or more days, you will still have a wonderful and authentic experience. Opt for a longer trip to visit more locations or if you want to dedicate some days to relaxing at your lodge.
Do I need vaccinations? Visas?
There are no required vaccinations to enter Kenya. However, we do have recommendations for vaccinations that you should discuss with your doctor. You MUST take malaria medication and we will advise you of the dosage.
Kenya requires an electronic visa application before you leave the US. Custom Kenya Safaris will provide written, step-by-step instructions for your visa including the documents you must upload.
What do I pack?
You will be limited to ONE suitcase (and one smaller hand tote) so you’ll need to pack light. I have prepared a checklist of clothing and other items that you’ll need. This will help minimize your packing and we can review it together.
Sample Itineraries
The journey from the US to Africa is long, so spending 12 days is the most popular trip with my clients. If your vacation time is short, I can still promise you an authentic safari in 7 days. I have created sample itineraries to whet your appetite for the wonders of being on a safari.
